In addition, we have partnered with two, highly respected non-profit organizations - the New England Aquarium and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). The Aquarium is our chief advisor on issues of seafood sustainability. The AZA's Conservation Endowment Fund receives some of the proceeds from the sale of Healthy Oceans® products for the purpose of providing grants to further scientific work in conservation, including marine life and ocean habitats. What is BAP Certification?
The Best Aquaculture Practices The Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) retail-level certification mark is a trademark of the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) that is licensed to the Aquaculture Certification Council (ACC) for use only by BAP-certified facilities. Certified facilities may use this certification mark on retail packaging only if it contains shrimp farmed and/or processed in accordance with BAP, as affirmed by site inspections and auditing procedures implemented by the ACC. BAP is a baseline standard for independent site inspections and effluent sampling with added protection for land and soil offering sanitary controls, therapeutic controls and traceability.
What is Naturland®?
Naturland Naturland is an organic certification organization based in Germany that has established the following principles for organic aquaculture:
  • Careful selection of sites for aquaculture farms
  • Protection of adjacent ecosystems
  • Active avoidance of conflicts with other users of the aquatic resources (e.g. fishermen)
  • Prohibition of chemicals (e.g. as anti-fouling agents in net pens)
  • Natural remedies and treatments in the case of disease
  • Feedstuff from organic agriculture
  • Fishmeal and -oil in feed derived from by-products of fish processed for human consumption (no dedicated "feed fishery")
  • Prohibition of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) neither in feedstuff nor in the stock itself
  • Processing according to organic standards
The Naturland certification for shrimp ensures that no chemicals, antibiotics or hormones are used in the production or processing of Healthy Oceans® shrimp.
Why is there no USDA organic certification logo on Healthy Oceans Products?
"USDA Certified Organic" standards and regulations for seafood are not formally in place - yet. This work continues under the US government's National Organic Program (NOP). It is the expectation that when a formal certification is available, Healthy Oceans® suppliers will strive to meet them.
What is Traceability and why is it important?
Traceability is knowing where your product comes from and how it was made. Healthy Oceans® product can be traced back to the farm, including the original pond and broodstock it came from. We can also trace feed supplies and components, water and environmental conditions that went into the Healthy Oceans® shrimp production through the Naturland and BAP certifications. The traceability then follows the product to market through the entire chain of custody, until it arrives at your supermarket.
Why did Healthy Oceans® choose these specific partners and certifications?
All of our partners perform specific functions and roles in bringing Healthy Oceans® product to you. Naturland is a product certification ensuring that the ingredients, environment, and welfare fall under an organic standard accepted in Europe. BAP is a process certification ensuring that the production and processing sites are sanitary, healthy and environmentally sound. The New England Aquarium, as our chief advisor on issues of seafood sustainability, helps to research the best methods and sources from which we will supply products. The AZA will help us build a broad base of support with the public at large.
Why does Healthy Oceans® use the "All Natural" designation?
Healthy Oceans® shrimp is All Natural, farmed shrimp. To date, "USDA Certified Organic" standards and regulations for seafood are not formally in place - yet. This work continues under the US government's National Organic Program (NOP). Healthy Oceans® is an extraordinary, All Natural product that guarantees so many more of the benefits that today's health conscious, green consumers are looking for:
  • Hormone Free
  • Antibiotic Free
  • No additives, chemicals or preservatives
  • Environmentally friendly packaging
  • Fair wages for farmers and employees
  • Low density ponds, less stress and humane treatment to shrimp
  • Responsible stewardship for the land, water and energy resources
  • Better tasting
  • Better for you
What makes the Healthy Oceans® bag biodegradable?
Our Healthy Oceans® bags are biodegradable in controlled aerobic and anaerobic composting systems and under ideal conditions they will degrade into organic humus within 9 months. Over 90% of plastic packaging ends up in a landfill. Healthy Oceans® bags are designed to biodegrade in this environment and are made from four components:
  • Biodegradable cellulose derived from tree fibers. Along with being manufactured with renewable resources, coating technologies recently developed allow this material to be used on the surface or outer layer.
  • Healthy Oceans® bags use water based inks and adhesives in their manufacturing process, other bags use solvent based
  • technology. Our ultra thin layers degrade along with other materials.
  • Biodegradable Polyethylene forms the sealant layer to resist moisture loss. A proprietary natural additive is blended during the manufacturing process to accelerate the degrading to months rather than years.
  • The re-sealable zipper used on our bag is also completely biodegradable.
How do you define sustainability in aquaculture?
People are recognizing the long-term benefits of healthier lifestyles that include eating seafood. Where will the supply come from to meet this increased demand? Orion Seafood believes part of this answer is environmentally responsible aquaculture. The world's oceans can no longer support unregulated over-fishing and poorly located and managed aquaculture farms, as an industrial means of food production since both can lead to detrimental impacts on the environment and affected communities. Healthy Oceans® products realize the benefits of 3rd party certifications along with commitments from the suppliers to continuous environmental improvement.
What do you think is the best way to realize sustainability within the aquaculture sector?
Aquaculture - the cultivation of aquatic plants and animals - currently accounts for nearly 40 percent of the seafood we consume, and is the fastest-growing food-producing segment in the world. With many marine species being overfished, or fished to capacity, aquaculture is an important source of protein globally. When carried out responsibly, it can be a reliable way to provide food for the masses. Environmentally responsible aquaculture reduces or even eliminates the operation's impacts such as release of farm wastes into the surrounding environment, the use of land and resources in a farm's construction and operation, the use of chemicals and antibiotics, and protects the other animals in and around the farms. Healthy Oceans® producers are required to demonstrate environmental responsibility. Click here to request the report on Healthy Oceans® farmed shrimp producer.
Why is Healthy Oceans® a premium product vs. standard shrimp?
Healthy Oceans® shrimp are grown with care for all aspects of their production from farm to fork. The production process and resources used to produce All Natural, high quality shrimp are more costly than more intensive shrimp farming methods which means our product costs more. A responsibly farmed, certified product which has the best shrimp flavor and texture deserves a better price and tastes better in your favorite dishes. When you try Healthy Oceans® shrimp we are sure you will agree! Plus - your purchase supports ocean conservation through the AZA's Conservation Endowment Fund.
Where Does Healthy Oceans® shrimp come from?
Healthy Oceans® shrimp are farmed in the country of Ecuador by one of the largest Organic Shrimp producers in the world. The temperate climate in Ecuador is ideal for shrimp farming. Our fully vertically integrated producer owns and operates its own shrimp hatchery, shrimp farms, feed factory and shrimp processing plant. Its philosophy is based on 3 fundamental pillars:
  • Care and restoration of the surrounding environment.
  • Care for its employees and community.
  • Producing an All Natural finished product with total traceability and without chemicals, antibiotics and GMOs.
What about mangrove protection?
Mangroves are protected by law in Ecuador and cutting is strictly prohibited. Our Healthy Oceans® producer has undertaken several voluntary mangrove reforestation programs, and mangrove protection and restoration form components of both the Naturland and BAP certifications. Our Healthy Oceans® producer will also carry out mangrove health assessments to ensure the success of the restoration programs and ensure the mangrove forests lining the farms are not negatively impacted by the production process.
